They are also commonly used in entryways, but it has also long been a staple to place pendant lighting in dining rooms, over kitchen islands, and in billiard rooms. Below, please see some helpful tips on placement of pendant lighting in your home’s common areas.

Pendant Lighting In The Dining Area

While traditionally we are used to seeing chandeliers in a dining area, but you can certainly buck the trend by using a multi-light pendant instead.

As a rule, hang your fixture about 36 inches above the dining room table surface to avoid the fixture interfering with dining. While hanging your fixture slightly lower will create a more intimate setting, be certain that the light is not so low that it creates a distracting glare.

Kitchen Island Lighting

If there’s one place in the home where task lighting reigns supreme, it would be the kitchen. Pendant lights hung over kitchen islands provide no-fuss task lighting while also enhancing your home’s décor with minimal effort.

Since kitchen islands can be a high traffic area for family and friends, consider this when deciding on how low to hang your pendant. When hanging a pendant light over your kitchen island, the pendant should be hung 30 to 40 inches above the island surface. The pendant should not be a bother to the person cooking in the area, but if used as a place of study or other work, it should be hung low enough to provide sufficient light to read by.

In Billiard Rooms and Hallways

The perfect pool table light makes a billiard room. In addition to aesthetic, task and ambient lighting during play is essential. When being used over a billiard table, place your pendant light fixture about 36 inches over the playing surface. Downward multi light pendants remain a favorite as they eliminate glares and shadows which in turn, promote better play.

Pendant fixtures used in entryways not only provide adequate illumination upon your arrival home, they also add elegance and flair to the area. Choose a dramatic fixture that produces a warm light, or hang a series of identical pendant lights down a long corridor.

If your ceiling is higher than 14 feet, the pendant’s shade should hang midpoint between floor and ceiling. If you have an 8 foot ceiling, be sure the shade is no closer than 6 inches from the ceiling and a minimum of 7 feet above the floor. Always center the fixture with the front door.

Remember, pendant usage isn’t limited to the areas discussed above. Use them in other areas of your home including the den, home office, and even the laundry room.
